2- ESI Active 05
It's not the first time that ESI has updated their classic nEar 05 studio monitor. For example, we had already included the ESI nEar 05 eXperience in our test marathon Active near-field monitors up to 1000 EUR , whereby we found that ESI is also happy to do "OEM work" for other brands . The M-Audio BX5a looked quite similar to the ESIs. The new ESI aktiv 05 doesn't fall far from the family tree either. But important changes should take place under the hood, so let's just take the time and take a closer look!
The ESI aktiv 05 is an active 2-way near-field monitor for the studio, which is equipped with a 5-inch woofer made of Kevlar fabric and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter. Both drivers are fired by two independent 30 watt power amplifiers, which is called bi-amping. However, RMS values are not given. Separation takes place at 2.5 kHz and of course before amplification.
The solid bass reflex housing is made of MDF and has been foiled with vinyl. The front baffle, on the other hand, is made of one piece of plastic, but also wrapped in subtle black. The drivers' chassis of the same color are magnetically shielded and expertly screwed to the front, which gives the small ESI box an elegant understatement. The tweeter even has a kind of waveguide that is supposed to optimize the radiation behavior.
“All black”, if you disregard the ESI Chrome logo and the blue status LED. Incidentally, the individually traded speakers weigh about 4.5 kg per piece and take up 250 x 176 x 200 mm in their dimensions, which means that the speaker can definitely be added to the compact class. A few simple foam rubber pads to "stick on the bottom yourself" are part of the scope of delivery.
3- Mackie MR6 MK3
Mackie has revised its low-priced and active near-field monitor series MR, which can be recognized by the addition of the name MK3, pronounced "Mark Drei". This now even consists of three models, which of course differ in size and performance. In terms of price, it starts with the smallest variant called MR5 MK3, which is equipped with a 5-inch woofer and 50 watts of power. The largest model, on the other hand, is again an 8-inch variant with 85 watts of power, which is called the Mackie MR8 MK3. What is new, however, is that there is also a medium model, which is equipped with a 6.5-inch driver and 65 watts of power - and this should be our test candidate today.
The Mackie MR6 MK3 is an active 2-way near-field monitor, which is equipped with a 6.5-inch low-frequency driver (woofer) made of polypropylene and a 1-inch silk dome tweeter. The latter was integrated into a subtle waveguide system of the front baffle, which with its outward curves should ensure a more homogeneous sound coupling to the housing and thus give us an expansion of the "sweet spot" and less distortion”
The housing of the MR6 MK3 consists mainly of thick MDF, which has been foiled with black vinyl for the sake of optics and has an elaborately shaped front panel or baffle. Visually, the appearance is reminiscent of its predecessor, but looks more modern to my taste, but above all is processed in a significantly higher quality, which of course there is absolutely nothing wrong with.
With dimensions of 323 x 222 x 305 mm (HxWxD), the MR6 MK3 speakers still fit more on the generously sized desk. But it is still better to have them sit on separate tripods, which is why you should plan one or two thalers for them. In both cases, however, care should be taken to ensure that a sufficiently large distance to the (rear) wall is maintained, because the box was constructed according to the bass reflex principle and its port is on the back. By the way, each speaker weighs around 7 kg, which can be considered a good average value.
4- RPM8 Studio Reference Monitors
With the RPM8, AKAI Professional is now entering the monitor market for the first time. The active bi-amp 2-way monitor should be able to convince even the most demanding producers and musicians with brilliant resolution, detailed depth graduation and straight frequency response.
It should be able to reproduce low frequencies absolutely cleanly up to an impressive 39 Hz. In the high range, it shines with a 1 "silk tweeter cooled by iron fluoride, which achieves distortion values of less than 0.3%.
The RPM8 tweeter is mounted in a recessed waveguide system for optimal sound radiation, which enables a very wide sweet spot with perfect depth graduation. The RPM8 can reproduce an enormous sound pressure level of up to 113dB in order to provide producers who like to listen to high volumes and concert-like levels with a perfect listening environment.
The high-performance near-field monitor also impresses with its professional combo inputs that allow the connection of XLR and 6.3 mm jack cables. The input signal can be conveniently adjusted using the volume control. The RPM8 housing is optimized for detailed audio playback. The low-resonance MDF design has rounded corners on all sides to reduce frequency diffraction to a minimum. The shape of the front and the loudspeaker housing is deliberately chosen so that the RPM8 can be positioned horizontally as well as vertically in order to be able to integrate the monitors physically and visually perfectly into the studio environment.
